10 // SUGAR PLUM BASS

SOURCE: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy · GENRE: Dubstep / Bass Music · BPM: 145

"The fairy was always a bass frequency."

Tchaikovsky wrote the celesta part of the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy to sound like something you couldn't quite place: magical, high, a little strange. He chose the celesta specifically because almost no one had heard one. The instrument makes the familiar feel alien. Sugar Plum Bass uses that same logic: the familiar melody arrives in the most familiar possible form (a music box), then the dubstep drop reveals the bass that was always underneath it. The fairy was always a bass frequency. The candy kingdom was always a rave. 'The bass is naughty, never nice' is the line that holds the whole thing. We checked the list. This is what was on it.

Welcome...
to the fantasy.

Tiptoe through the wires and the snow
Where the electric gardens grow
Candy coated circuits humming low
A technicolor, frozen show
Close your eyes and taste the sound
We're lifting off the solid ground
The fairy dances round and round
Until the heavy beat is found

Dreaming in digital...
Dreaming in digital...
The drop is coming
It's sweet like sugar
Plum.

SUGAR PLUM!
Wub-wub-wub-wub
Fairy!
Let it drop!

Shatter the glass, break the ice
This paradise comes with a price
We roll the dice, we check it twice
The bass is naughty, never nice
Spinning in a purple haze
Lost inside the holiday maze
Set the frozen night ablaze
These are the electric days

Can you feel the magic?
Can you feel the magic?
1, 2, 1, 2...
CRASH!

Ooh-Whoa-Oh!
Sugar Plum Bass!

Sweet dreams.
